Abstract in English
The doctoral thesis Contradictions of the Weimar Republic: The "dialogue" between Bertolt Brecht and Carl Schmitt in the light of the play "The Exception and the Rule" proposes to show the political resonances of the Weimar Republic in the two authors. Those political implications are observed in the intratextual and intertextual analyses of Brecht's didactic plays, particularly The Exception and the Rule. The present work starts from the concept of the political, developed in one of the Carl Schmitt's studies, in which the friend versus enemy relationship is addressed. All of Brecht's notes on the possible progression of the play's text as taken on stage are tracked. Through analysis and interpretation of the base text, its intra-texts and the paratexts, it is intended to identify references to Schmitt's concept of the political, aiming to evident how that "dialogue" is structured. Finally, the analysis shows that, despite being antipodes in the ideological spectrum, the issues addressed by the authors eventually converge. It is up to Brecht, though, to problematize these contingencies, therefore his theater, especially the didactic plays, effectively serves the fruitful objective of educating the human being to redirect the path of a possible revolution, since the individual belongs to a collective. It falls to Schmitt, arguing with a decisive attitude, in the terms of the Law, to indicate that the individual, especially a sovereign, may cause rupture to the social pact and determine friends and enemies, thus eliminating the enemy. At the same time, an overview of the political situation experienced by the "dialogue" between the two antagonist authors during the Weimar Republic is presented, which has returned to be current in recent times, signed by authoritarian regimes.
