Esta dissertação propõe a análise de Romeu e Julieta na aldeia (Romeo und Julia auf dem Dorfe), de Gottfried Keller, uma das cinco novelas inclusas no ciclo Die Leute von Seldwyla (1856). Trata-se de uma obra do Realismo Poético e com uma grande carga simbólica, o que suscita questionamentos em relação à estética realista da metade do século XIX e em que medida as representações realista e simbólica interagem. Para embasar o estudo, são retomados os pressupostos da estética realista alemã e contribuições da novelística com o intuito de observar como se manifesta este potencial simbólico por meio dos Leitmotive (motivos condutores), um dos principais artifícios da novela de língua alemã. Conforme os princípios do Realismo Poético e de determinadas especificidades da obra de Gottfried Keller, também se procura investigar qual a função que o Leitmotiv adquire ao tentar significar poeticamente, ainda que de maneira artificial, os acontecimentos contingentes cada vez mais comuns do modo de vida moderno que já começara a surgir em meados do século XIX

This dissertation proposes the analysis of A village Romeo and Juliet (Romeo und Julia auf dem Dorfe) by Gottfried Keller, one of the five novella included in the cycle Die Leute von Seldwyla (1856). It is a work of Poetic Realism and has a great symbolic weight, which raises questions regarding the realist aesthetics of the mid-nineteenth century and to what extent realist and symbolic representations interact. To support the study, the criteria of German realist aesthetics and contributions from the novella theory are resumed in order to observe how this symbolic potential manifests itself through the Leitmotive (leitmotifs), one of the main artifices of the German novella. In accordance with the principles of Poetic Realism and certain specificities of Gottfried Keller's work it is also sought to investigate what function the Leitmotiv acquires in attempting to poetically signify, albeit in an artificial manner, the increasingly common contingent events of the modern way of life that had begun to emerge in the mid-nineteenth century
