Abstract in English
This thesis Strategies of Tradition: Cicero in the Declamationes by the Elder Seneca and in the Dialogus de oratoribus by Tacitus intends to analyse the modifications in the system of Post-Classical Latin Rhetoric in the Declamationes by the Elder Seneca and in the Dialogus de oratoribus by Tacitus. Both works describe the conditions of Latin Rhetoric under the lmperium, confronting the changes with which they deal with the tradition of Republican Rhetoric, systematized by Cicero in Brutus. Thus, the first chapter analyses how Cícero relates the Latin oratory to the institutional needs of the Republican system. ln the second chapter, it is considered Seneca's narrative strategies, as presented in the Preface of the First Book of the Controverses, and after that the three declamations that deal with Cicero's death. ln the third and final chapter, about the Dialogus by Tacitus, it is analysed the debate about the causes of oratory decadence in Aper's, Maternus', and Messala's speechs. Each one of them reveals a peculiar way to relate itself to the Ciceronean tradition.
