A Psychomachia, escrita por Aurélio Prudêncio Clemente (348 c. 410), é um poema de mais de novecentos versos, escritos em hexâmetros datílicos. De tema cristão, mas com inspiração nas epopeias clássicas, particularmente na Eneida, a obra exalta dogmas então recém proclamados e retrata a luta travada na alma do cristão, através da personificação de vícios e virtudes. Em nosso trabalho, defendemos que tal obra culmina em uma legitimação literária da nova religião, o cristianismo, o qual, apesar de já ter recebido a adesão de boa parte da população romana, até mesmo das camadas sociais mais elevadas, ainda carecia de obras literárias relevantes, no sentido estrito da palavra para aquele então, lacuna essa que Prudêncio se esforçou em preencher com algumas de suas obras, particularmente a epopeia aqui tratada. Os dois primeiros capítulos de nossa tese são dedicados, respectivamente, a uma contextualização histórica e literária, nos quais situamos Prudêncio dentro da Antiguidade Tardia e analisamos seu estilo, bem como os recursos e estratégias retóricas empregados em sua obra. No capítulo terceiro realizamos uma tradução em prosa do texto original latino, com notas de rodapé sucintas, que são esmiuçadas e ampliadas ao longo do capítulo quarto, através da comparação e, pontualmente, contraste, de pesquisadores que já escreveram sobre o tema. Finalmente, no capítulo quinto, através de uma análise minuciosa das principais personagens e suas referências à Eneida, buscamos entender melhor como Prudêncio conseguiu entrar no imaginário popular por tantos séculos e ser um marco na literatura de tema cristão, que não mais centraria seus esforços composicionais exclusivamente ao culto, à apologética, à exegese e à hermenêutica

The Psychomachia, written by Aurelius Prudentius Clemens (348 c. 410), is a poem of more than nine hundred verses, written in dactylic hexameters. With a Christian theme, but inspired by classical epics, particularly the Aeneid, the work exalts newly proclaimed dogmas and portrays the struggle waged in the Christian's soul, through the personification of vices and virtues. We argue that such a work culminates in a literary legitimation of the new religion, Christianity, which, despite having already received the adhesion of a good part of the Roman population, even of the highest social strata, still lacked relevant literary works, in the strict sense of the word for that time, a gap that Prudentius tried to fill with some of his works, especially the epic dealt with here. The first two chapters of our thesis are devoted, respectively, to a historical and literary context, in which we place Prudentius within Late Antiquity and analyze his style, as well as the rhetorical strategies and resources employed in his work. In the third chapter, we carry out a prose translation of the original Latin text, with brief footnotes, which are detailed and expanded throughout the fourth chapter, through the comparison and, occasionally, contrast, of researchers who have already written on the subject. Finally, in the fifth chapter, through a meticulous analysis of the main characters and their references to the Aeneid, we seek to better understand how Prudentius managed to enter the popular imagination for so many centuries and be a landmark in Christian literature, which would no longer focus its compositional efforts exclusively on church service, apologetics, exegesis, and hermeneutics
