Este trabalho é dedicado a uma investigação da prosa de Marco Pórcio Catão (234 - 149 a.C.), assunto que interessou aos modernos, sob a imagem do "fundador da prosa literária latina", e sobre o qual há diversas observações nos textos antigos, notadamente em Cícero e alguns de seus contemporâneos (assunto discutido no capítulo 1). Trata-se-se, mais especificamente, em primeiro lugar, de descrever as estruturas frasais e suprafrasais (referidas como "módulos"), bem como distintas formas de agenciamento dessas estruturas (referidas como "procedimentos"), que constituem a urdidura da prosa catoniana. Ao mesmo tempo, esforça-se por compreender como tais módulos e procedimentos são manipulados em correlação funcional com distintas situações discursivas, especialmente à luz dos diferentes tipos de textos escritos por Catão, especialmente historiografia e oratória (investigados respectivamente nos capítulos 4 e 5), de acordo com diretrizes gerais que balizam aqueles tipos textuais e com distinções internas que particularizam a composição das obras a eles pertencentes. A adaptabilidade dos módulos frasais e suprafrasais e dos procedimentos aos distintos contextos textuais permite apreender a prosa de Catão como sistema complexo, ou mesmo como matriz de produção de textos, em produtivo diálogo com o mais vasto sistema da prosa pré-clássica (sucintamente apresentado no capítulo 3), no interior do qual Catão atuava.

This investigation is concerned with Marcus Portius Cato's (234 - 149 B.C.) prose, a topic of interest for modern authors, who have seen in him the "father of Latin literary prose", but also for the ancients, who made a number of observations on Cato's writings, first and foremost Cicero and some of his contemporaries (both ancient and modern views of Cato's prose are discussed in chapter 1). The research is specifically concerned with describing Cato's sentence types and his patterns of arrangement of multiple sentences, in larger chains of text. It further aims at understanding how these structures are functionally related to different communicative situations, especially as they are moulded by the diverse genres to which Cato contributed, especially historiography and oratory (studied in chapters 4 and 5 respectively). The main guidelines that underlie the writing of these genres are taken into account along with those conventions that apply to specific units within each genre. The treatment of sentence structures and their combinations in the light of these diverse textual contexts makes it possible to envisage Cato's prose as a complex system or even as a matrix of textual production, developed within the larger system of pre-classical Latin prose (briefly described in chapter 3), of which Cato's practice is an active part.
