Este estudo tem como principal suporte teórico a Nova Retórica, em especial a teoria proposta por Chaïm Perelman e Lucie Olbrecths-Tyteca na obra Tratado da argumentação: a nova retórica, e visa à análise de estratégias argumentativas presentes num "corpus" constituído de dez poemas selecionados do livro A educação pela pedra, de João Cabral de Melo Neto. Procura-se demonstrar, pelo exame dos planos e das estratégias argumentativas, notadamente pela identificação de diferentes tipos de argumento, classificados conforme a teoria de Perelman e Tyteca, que o discurso poético pode ser desenvolvido a partir de estruturas eminentemente retóricas. A análise contempla procedimentos técnicos comuns em discursos não-literários e, ao fim, corrobora nossa hipótese de que a poesia de João Cabral tem uma organização argumentativa, que apresenta regularidade no uso de operadores discursivos, de figuras retóricas e de provas lógicas, isto é, de provas constituídas por argumentos que se aliam às provas ética e patética, já previstas na Retórica Clássica. Trata-se, segundo a Nova Retórica, de argumentos quase-lógicos, argumentos baseados na estrutura do real e ligações que fundamentam a estrutura do real. Ao exame simultâneo das diferentes estratégias argumentativas, segue-se proposta de categorização dessas estratégias e dos planos argumentativos, assim como dos tipos de argumento usados nos poemas, a fim de compor-se um quadro que encerre os componentes retóricos recorrentes no "corpus". Essa síntese antecederá as conclusões a respeito do elo entre poesia e retórica e entre razão e emoção, manifestado pela racionalidade argumentativa que constitui o eixo do discurso poético de João Cabral de Melo Neto

This study has the New Rhetoric as its main theoretical support, specially the theory proposed by Chaïm Perelman and Lucie Olbrechts-Tyteca in their Tratado da argumentação: a nova retórica, and aims at the analysis of the argumentative strategies present in a corpus of ten poems selected from the book A educação pela pedra, written by João Cabral de Melo Neto. By examining the argumentative plans and strategies, and more specifically by identifying the different kinds of argument, as classified in the Perelman and Tyteca's theory, we intend to demonstrate that poetical speech can be developed from eminently rhetorical structures. The analysis considers technical procedures that are usual in non-literary speeches and, finally, confirms our hypothesis that João Cabral's poetry has an argumentative organization, which presents regular use of discursive operators, rhetorical figures and logical proofs, that is, proofs formed by arguments connected to ethical e pathetical proofs, foreseen in the Classic Rhetoric. According to the New Rhetoric, these are quasi-logical arguments, arguments based on the structure of the reality and links that support the structure of the reality. After the simultaneous examination of the different argumentative strategies, we propose a categorization of these strategies and argumentative plans, as well as of the kinds of argument used in the poems, in order to compose a view of the rhetorical components that are frequently used in the corpus. This synthesis will precede the conclusions about the link between poetry and rhetoric, reason and emotion, expressed by the argumentative rationality that forms the backbone of João Cabral de Melo Neto's poetical speech
