A temática desta tese é o perfil teórico-metodológico da Grammatica portugueza, redigida por Júlio César Ribeiro Vaughan (1845-1890) em 1881 e, depois, reformulada na segunda edição, publicada em 1885. Partimos do corolário de que a Grammatica portugueza tem sido representada em pesquisas como responsável pela ruptura com a teoria gramatical racionalista, considerada demasiadamente "metafísica", para a adoção de teoria que aborda empiricamente os fatos linguísticos, como a histórico-comparatista do século XIX. Trabalhamos com as hipóteses de que: (i) não há rupturas teóricas na Grammatica portugueza, pois as teorias racionalista, comparatista e naturalista acumulam-se na obra, e a dinâmica de integração dessa acumulação reflete seu perfil teórico-metodológico; (ii) a Grammatica portugueza contém uma teoria gramatical particular, decorrente do horizonte de retrospecção heterogêneo do autor, que deixa transparecer o contexto intelectual do final do século XIX; (iii) a Grammatica é, consequentemente, uma obra na qual a inovação não ocorre pela substituição de uma teoria por outra, mas pela integração das teorias racionalista, histórico-comparatista e naturalista que são acrescentadas à base teórica greco-latina; e (iv) esse perfil teórico-metodológico implica uma peculiar formulação de conceitos, regras e exemplos da gramática. Para aferir essas hipóteses, identificamos, primeiramente, como, na gramaticografia brasileira, críticos e pesquisadores estabeleceram duas representações dominantes e distintas acerca do papel histórico da Grammatica portugueza: (i) a representação de que a obra é pioneira em adotar novas teorias; e (ii) a de que a obra é precursora em anunciar novas teorias. Em seguida, descrevemos o horizonte de retrospecção da Grammatica portugueza, a fim de investigar os autores e as obras que Júlio Ribeiro indexou conscientemente na elaboração de sua gramática, para descrever (i) a natureza teórica das obras e dos autores mencionados; (ii) a finalidade da indexação; e a (iii) a maneira como Ribeiro se posiciona ao indexá-los na obra. Por fim, examinamos a integração das teorias presentes na composição dos saberes materializados na Grammatica portugueza, a fim de descrever como Júlio Ribeiro integra premissas de diferentes teorias para constituir os elementos estruturantes de uma gramática. Por meio dessas reflexões, confirmamos que o perfil teórico-metodológico da Grammatica se dá pela integração das teorias racionalistas, histórico-comparatistas e naturalistas (sobre a base greco-latina), decorrente do horizonte de retrospecção heterogêneo de Ribeiro, o qual lhe permite formular de modo particular conceitos, regras e exemplos na Grammatica portugueza.

The theme of this thesis is the theoretical and methodological profile of Grammatica Portugueza, written by Júlio César Ribeiro Vaughan (1845-1890) in 1881 and later reformulated in the second edition, published in 1885. We start from the corollary that Grammatica Portugueza has been represented in research as responsible for the break with the rationalist grammatical theory, considered overly "metaphysical", for the adoption of a theory that empirically addresses linguistic facts, such as the 19th century comparative-historical one. We work with the hypotheses that: (i) there are no theoretical breaks in Grammatica Portugueza, since the rationalist, comparative and naturalist theories accumulate in the work, and the integration dynamics of this accumulation reflects its theoretical-methodological profile; (ii) Grammatica Portugueza contains a particular grammatical theory, resulting from the author's heterogeneous retrospection horizon, which reveals the intellectual context of the late XIX century; (iii) Grammatica Portugueza is, consequently, a work in which innovation does not occur by replacing one theory with another, but by integrating the rationalist, historical-comparative and naturalist theories that are added to the Greco-Latin theoretical base; and (iv) this theoretical-methodological profile implies a peculiar formulation of concepts, rules and examples of grammar. To assess these hypotheses, we first identified how, in Brazilian grammar, critics and researchers established two dominant and distinct representations about the historical role of Grammatica Portugueza: (i) the representation that the work is a pioneer in adopting new theories; and (ii) that the work is a precursor in announcing new theories. Afterwards, we describe the retrospective horizon of Grammatica Portugueza, in order to investigate the authors and works that Júlio Ribeiro consciously indexed in the elaboration of his grammar, to describe (i) the theoretical nature of the works and authors mentioned; (ii) the purpose of indexing; and (iii) the way Ribeiro positions himself when indexing them in the work. Finally, we examine the integration of the theories present in the composition of the knowledge materialized in Grammatica Portugueza, in order to describe how Júlio Ribeiro integrates assumptions of different theories to constitute the structuring elements of a grammar. Through these reflections, we confirm that the theoretical-methodological profile of Grammatica is due to the integration of rationalist, historical-comparative and naturalist theories (on the Greco-Latin basis), resulting from Ribeiro's heterogeneous retrospection horizon, which allows him to formulate in a particular way concepts, rules and examples in Grammatica Portugueza.
