Abstract in English
This text aims to collate the witnesses of the first five editions of Poemas e Canções (1908), by Vicente de Carvalho, whose tradition consists of 17 versions - between reissues and reprints. The first five were released while the author was alive, which resulted in a large number of author variants. In each explanatory note at the end of the copy, the writer from Santos defended changes such as the use of intelligible vocabulary, the addition of new excerpts (in order to complement the pre-existing ones) and the addition of poems relegated to previous selections. Carvalho played a relevant role in public life in São Paulo in the years that correspond to the transition from the 19th to the 20th century, both in politics and through his writings. Successor of Artur Azevedo to occupy seat 29 of the Brazilian Academy of Letters, the poet stood out in the Parnassian scene for the different text in theme (characterized by the ode to nature and love) and in form, as he valued comprehension above extreme scholarship linguistics. In such a way, it became popular with the readers of his time (see the countless editions and reprints of his work) and respected by critics, upon receiving analyzes from names like Otto Maria Carpeaux (2012) and Alfredo Bosi (2013). From these characteristics, artistic value and creative process in constant review - paying attention to the different origins of each poem, that is, the paths of creation - we obtain rich philological material to be polished following the guidelines of Textual Criticism. In this text, we present a survey of the work's tradition, its history and relationships. In addition, the edition of the author's last living version, accompanied by footnotes with variants found in the publications of 1908 and 1917, and a synoptic edition of the three editions in question.
