Esta tese relata a produção intelectual e metodológica da pesquisa intitulada Ativismo LGBT na imprensa brasileira: análise crítica da representação de atores sociais na Folha de S. Paulo. Tal estudo consiste na análise de como homossexuais lésbicas e gays , bissexuais e pessoas transgêneras travestis, transexuais e intersexuais (LGBT), indivíduos historicamente excluídos de seus direitos sociais, são representados/as no jornal impresso de maior circulação do Brasil, a Folha de S. Paulo. O material que serviu de corpus ao trabalho foi composto por notícias sobre a realização do evento denominado Parada do Orgulho LGBT, ação coletiva organizada na cidade de São Paulo por pessoas que defendem a garantia da igualdade de direitos a LGBT. Trata-se de textos sobre todas as edições desse evento (1997-2012), publicados no dia e na data posterior em que ocorre. A partir da análise desses dados, a pesquisa propôs investigar o discurso produzido por meio das notícias, descrevendo e interpretando os recursos lexicogramaticais potencialmente capazes de produzir representações dos atores envolvidos na Parada, sobretudo a população LGBT, a fim de compreender a construção de sentidos gerada a partir dessas representações. Para tanto, essa investigação segue os pressupostos de epistemologias críticas nos estudos linguísticos contemporâneos, particularmente aqueles cunhados no interior da Análise Crítica do Discurso, notadamente o enfoque feito pelo linguista Norman Fairclough (2003), a partir do qual podemos refletir sobre o papel da linguagem como elemento constitutivo das práticas sociais e, portanto, como componente de reprodução e transformação da sociedade. Além disso, para subsidiar a compreensão sobre as categorias lexicogramaticais que analisamos, o estudo se apoiou na teoria de Theo van Leuween (2008a), acerca da representação de atores sociais realizada por grupos nominais, e nos postulados teórico-analíticos cunhados pela Linguística Sistêmico-Funcional, especificamente no trabalho de Michael Halliday e Christian Matthiessen (2004) sobre grupos verbais, expressos através do Sistema de Transitividade. Os resultados dessa investigação apontaram para a construção de um discurso em que LGBT são representados/as por meio de itens lexicais de Generecização e, por isso, como indivíduos sem personalidade especificada, o que sugere terem identidades e comportamentos homogêneos; através de orações transitivas formadas por Processos Materiais, nas quais ocupam o lugar de Ator apenas de ações criativas sobre a Parada, recebendo, portanto, pouco poder de transformação social; e por intermédio de orações transitivas constituídas de Processos Relacionais Intensivos Atributivos, onde exercem a função de Portadores de Atributos caricaturais que os/as qualificam como constantemente animosos/as e irreverentes. Assim, sob uma interpretação do impacto desses dados no interior da conjuntura sociopolítica atual do ativismo LGBT, concluímos que esse discurso, por restringir a capacidade agentiva e diversidade identitária dos atores LGBT, revela um importante papel da Folha na produção de significados que afetam o modo como, em geral, a sociedade compreende o movimento LGBT e alimentam o tratamento hostil e estigmatizante historicamente dirigido a esses atores sociais.

This thesis describes the intellectual and methodological research entitled LGBT activism in the Brazilian press: a critical analysis of the representation of social actors in the Folha de S. Paulo. Such study consists in the analysis about how homosexuals lesbians and gays , bisexuals and transgender people trasnvestites, transsexuals and intersexs (LGBT) individuals historically excluded from their social rights, are represented in the printed newspaper with the largest circulation from Brazil, Folha S. Paulo. The material that composed the corpus of work was comprised of news about the event called LGBT Pride Parade, collective action organized in São Paulo city by people who defend the assurance of equality rights to LGBT. These are texts about all editions of this event (1997-2012), and published on and a later date at which it occurs. From analysis of these data, our research proposes to investigate the discourse produced through these news, describing and interpreting resources lexicogramaticais potentially capable of to produce representations of the actors involved in the Parade, especially the LGBT population, to understand the construction of meanings generated from these representations. Therefore, this investigation follows the assumptions of critical epistemologies of contemporary linguistic studies, particularly those minted inside the Critical Discourse Analysis, notably in the approach made by the linguist Norman Fairclough (2003), from which we can reflect about the role of language as a constitutive element of social practices, and thus as a component of reproduction or transformation of society. In addition, to support the comprehension of the categories lexicogramaticias that we analyzed, the research leaned on theory of Theo van Leuween (2008a), about the representation of social actors realized by nominal groups and on theoretical and, on analytical postulated coined by Systemic Functional Linguistics, specifically the work of Michael Halliday and Christian Matthiessen (2004) about verbal groups, expressed through of Transitivity System. The results of this research point to the construction of a discourse in which LGBT are represented through lexical items of Generecization and, therefore, as individuals without specified personality, this suggests they have homogeneous identities and behaviors; through of transitive clauses formed by Materials Processes, in which they occupy the function of Actor only in creative actions on Pride, receiving, less social power transformation; and through transitive clauses constituted formed by Intensive Attributive Relational Process, where they perform the function of Carriers of caricatures Attributes that qualify them as constantly spirited and irreverent. Thus, from an interpretation of the impact of the data in the current sociopolitical situation of LGBT activism, we conclude that this discourse, for restricting the agentive ability and identity diversity of LGBT actors, point an important role of Folha in the production of meanings that affect how, in general, the society understands the LGBT movement and feed the hostile and discriminatory treatment historically addressed these social actors.
