The research aims to address the significance in the Brazilian film Elena (2012), directed by Petra Costa. In it, a very personal experience results in a filmic text about the director's relationship with the memory of her sister, Elena, who commits suicide at the age of twenty in the early 1990s. Beyond the direct recollection of the facts through a first-person discourse, the intimate motivations of the Petra girl-woman that extrapolate the pain of loss or use it as a trigger for other manifested feelings are set forth: the states of soul, the passions. Then we came into contact with the passionate condition of the characters. Bringing aspects of a documentary style, the film is built from a deeply emotive narrative, highlighting subjectivity and affections. From the search of the senses, we will try to highlight the passionate path of the subjects. For this, we carry out semiotic analysis based on the French line theory, whose founder is Lithuanian A. J. Greimas. We also follow the theoretical advances proposed by Zilberberg, drawing on the notion of tenseness. Thus, we unite modal values and tensive categories to understand passions. Mourning, melancholy and happening are concepts centrally worked in this dissertation. We also seek to understand the enunciative processes capable of creating certain meaning effects. Our hypothesis is that there is a passionate tone mediating the relationship between enunciator and enunciatee, because, given the characteristics of the film already mentioned, we are faced not only with a "discourse of passion", that is, an approach to the states of soul of the actors of the utterance, but also with a "passionate discourse" manifested, we believe, by a specific organization of the language of cinema. Since syncretism is a global enunciative strategy, we consider it fundamental to resort to manifestation, especially in a work such as that proposed by us, which uses the resources of the plane of expression to create a film with poetic traits. Therefore we want to understand how affectivity permeates the filmic construction in its manifestation.
