Abstract in English
This dissertation describes aspects of the phonology and morphosyntax of the Sanöma language spoken in Brazil. Sanöma is one of the six languages of the Yanomami linguistic family, spoken in the Yanomami Indigenous Territory, in the states of Amazonas and Roraima (Brazil), and Venezuela. The data were collected in fieldwork with native speakers from the communities around the Awaris landing strip. We describe aspects of the phonology and morphology by pointing to the distinction between the phonological inventory of Sanöma and the other languages of the family. This dissertation has identified a consistency of the head final order of this polysynthetic language, which is manifested in the SOV unmarked order of constituents, among other contexts. The morphosyntax of the two major classes (Nouns and Verbs) has been described with examples. Attributive stems (adjectives) were analyzed as part of a verbal subclass. We show, however, their similarity with the class of nouns. Regarding the class of nouns, a rich morphology associated with nominal classifiers was identified. Evidences for the analysis of an ergative-absolutive case system was presented. Four verbal subclasses were described: dynamic, attributive, positional and irregular. Verbal agreement occurs through proclitics. Verbal enclitics are derivational, inflectional and clausal. Polar and nonpolar interrogative sentences have been briefly described. The rich morphology of tense, aspect, space and evidentiality was presented, as well as temporal, causal, counterfactual and concessive subordinate clauses.
