O núcleo deste trabalho consiste em uma análise crítica da teoria de Tomasello a partir de uma perspectiva filosófica inspirada pelo pensamento de Wittgenstein. Os objetivos são apresentar uma abordagem original acerca da teoria de Tomasello e oferecer um acesso à filosofia tardia de Wittgenstein, tendo em vista os interesses da linguística. Além disso, tenho o intuito de exercer uma análise crítica que, se bem sucedida, irá promover essa inspiração naturalista e contribuir para um cenário mais interdisciplinar na investigação da vida humana. O naturalismo e as ciências cognitivas compõem o contexto amplo em que se situam as discussões deste trabalho. O escopo será fechado, de um lado, no tipo distintivo de naturalismo inspirado por Wittgenstein. De outro lado, o escopo será reduzido pelo foco em questões sobre a linguagem e o significado, a partir dos problemas e soluções apresentados por Tomasello. A filosofia de Wittgenstein fornece diretrizes metodológicas e um ferramental capaz de lidar com uma vasta gama de problemas conceituais relacionados à compreensão da linguagem e da mente humana. Ela também fornece uma visão inspiradora do ser humano e da natureza, uma que não nos apresenta como uma excepcionalidade a ser explicada, ou como entidades bipartidas em corpo e mente. A teoria de Tomasello suscita duas grandes questões sobre a linguagem e o significado que ocupam desde sempre a filosofia da linguagem. O problema do significado, que diz respeito ao emprego da língua para falar das coisas e pode ser identificado com as relações semânticas de referência e verdade. O problema da origem é uma condição lógica imposta às teorias naturalistas sobre o significado: para explicar a origem do significado não se pode pressupor o significado. A solução de Tomasello reside sobre o conceito de compreensão de intencionalidade, que, segundo ele, subjaz à cognição e comunicação humana e fornece uma base natural para a emergência do significado. Um dos objetivos de Tomasello é desintelectualizar os estudos sobre evolução e aquisição, incorporando na investigação os aspectos essencialmente sociais e interacionais da cognição. Mas, como pretendo mostrar, sua prática está aderida a uma imagem externo/interno da mente e à ideia de língua como veículo transmissor de informação entre mentes individuais. Essa imagem enviesada do ser humano, da língua e da interação, que Tomasello recebe da tradição intelectual, leva-o aos mesmos equívocos que ele denunciou em alguns de seus antecessores. Quando as investigações são orientadas por uma visão de como as coisas deveriam ser, e não de como elas de fato são, o risco é que a teoria se veja às voltas com uma necessidade de explicação engendrada pelo próprio mecanismo da teoria. O núcleo da minha argumentação será que a teoria de Tomasello está orientada por uma necessidade explicativa, nomeadamente: que precisa haver uma singularidade humana originária; que essa singularidade precisa ser mental, onde: mental é sinônimo de não-observável, não-observável é sinônimo de privado.

The core of this work consists of a critical analysis of Tomasello's theory from a philosophical perspective inspired by Wittgenstein's thought. The objectives are to present an original approach to Tomasello's theory and to offer access to Wittgenstein's late philosophy, bearing in mind the interests of linguistics. In addition, I intend to exercise a critical analysis that, if successful, will promote this naturalistic inspiration and contribute to a more interdisciplinary scenario in the investigation of human life. Naturalism and cognitive sciences make up the broad context in which the discussions of this work are situated. The scope will be closed, on the one hand, on the distinctive type of naturalism inspired by Wittgenstein. On the other hand, the scope will be reduced by focusing on questions about language and meaning, based on the problems and solutions presented by Tomasello. Wittgenstein's philosophy provides methodological guidelines and tools capable of dealing with a wide range of conceptual problems related to understanding language and the human mind. It also provides an inspiring view of nature, one that does not present human beings as an exceptionality to be explained, or as entities bipartite in body and mind, but as hole persons in a natural world. Tomasello's theory raises two major questions on language and meaning, which have occupied the philosophy of language. The problem of meaning, which concerns the use of language to talk about things, and can be identified with the semantic relations of reference and truth. The problem of origin, which is a logical condition imposed on naturalistic theories of meaning: to explain the origin of meaning, one cannot presuppose meaning. Tomasello's solution rests on the concept of understanding intentionality, which, according to him, underlies human cognition and provides a natural basis for the emergence of meaning. One of Tomasello's objectives is de-intellectualize studies on evolution and acquisition, incorporating social and interactional aspects of cognition into the investigation. But, as I intend to show, his practice adheres to an external/internal image of the mind and the idea of language as a vehicle for transmitting information between individual minds. This biased image of human beings, language and interaction, which Tomasello receives from the intellectual tradition, leads hum to the same mistakes he denounced in some of his predecessors. When investigations are guided by an idealized of how things should be, and not how they actually are, the risk is that the theory finds itself grappling with a need for explanation engendered by the very mechanism of the theory. The core of my argument will be that Tomasello's theory is guided by an explanatory need, namely: that there needs to be an original human singularity; that this uniqueness needs to be mental, where: mental is synonymous with non-observable, non-observable is synonymous with private.
