Este trabalho visou investigar como a polidez e a impolidez foram descritas por estrangeiros em gramáticas produzidas do século XVI ao XIX. A partir da metodologia de análise do conhecimento proposta por Swiggers (2004 [2003]) em camadas, buscamos observar elementos externos e internos às obras, analisando o contexto e a terminologia empregada na descrição da polidez. No capítulo introdutório, apresentamos algumas considerações iniciais sobre o fazer historiográfico e uma breve revisão da literatura sobre o tema. No capítulo I, tratamos da definição da polidez e da impolidez, e como estas têm sido sistematizadas pelos linguistas que investigam a língua japonesa. Além disso, apresentamos as perspectivas da polidez pelo viés êmico e ético (EELEN, 2001). No capítulo II, abordamos a metodologia de análise utilizada, definindo a cobertura do trabalho historiográfico, estabelecendo o tema, o tempo, o espaço e os agentes. O capítulo III foi dedicado à apresentação do contexto de produção e à análise da camada teórica, investigando a concepção de linguagem, língua, língua japonesa e polidez nas gramáticas selecionadas. No capítulo IV, investigamos a camada técnica, analisando o tratamento da polidez e a terminologia utilizada em cada obra. No capítulo de considerações finais, concluímos que a perspectiva do tratamento dado à polidez verificada é predominantemente êmica, em que se considera o conhecimento nativo com uma perspectiva de particularidade, não universal. Ao analisar a concepção de língua japonesa, verificamos ideologias presentes que revelam um sujeito descritor tomado por sua perspectiva ocidental, branca, colonizadora, o que não está tão evidenciado no tratamento da polidez. Dessa maneira, o que se verificou foram descrições da polidez e da impolidez da língua japonesa como uma língua 'exótica', distinta das línguas vernáculas europeias.

This work is aimed at investigating how politeness and impoliteness were described by foreigners in grammars produced from the 16th to the 19th century. Based on the knowledge analysis methodology proposed by Swiggers (2004 [2003]) in 'layers', we seek to observe external and internal elements to the works, analyzing the context and terminology used in the description of politeness. In the introductory chapter, we presented some initial considerations about the historiographical work and a brief review of the literature on the subject. In chapter I, we addressed the definition of politeness and impoliteness, and how these have been systematized by linguists who investigate the Japanese language. In addition, we presented the perspectives of politeness from an emic and etic point of view (EELEN, 2001). In chapter II, we approached the analysis methodology used, defining the coverage of the historiographical work, establishing the theme, time, space and agents. Chapter III was dedicated to the presentation of the production context and the analysis of the theoretical layer, investigating the conception of language, Japanese language and politeness in the selected grammars. In chapter IV, we investigate the technical layer, analyzing the treatment of politeness and the terminology used in each work. In the conclusive chapter, we concluded that the perspective of the treatment given to verified politeness is predominantly emic, in which native knowledge is taken into account, considering it with a perspective of particularity, not a universal one. When analyzing the conception of the Japanese language, we identified ideologies that reveal a descriptor subject taken by its western, white, colonizing perspective, whick is not so evident in the treatment of politeness. Thus, what was found were descriptions of the politeness and impoliteness of the Japanese language as an 'exotic' language, distinct from European vernaculars
