Abstract in English
The reconstitution of private libraries of Vila Rica, Minas Gerais, between 1750 and 1800, made it possible to reveal the social practices concerning the books of the Brazilian colonial period. We reconstituted those libraries by examining the inventories found among the Archives of the First and Second Register Offices of the Historical Archives of the Inconfidence Museum. After we examined how book trade worked in Portugal, Brazil and, especially, in Vila Rica, we were able to confirm the importance of the several commercial settings, of the institutional networks, and of the socialization nucleuses for the realization of a non-specialized book trade. We found out that the local general stores, the commercial agents, and public sales were fundamental for the dissemination of the written word in Vila Rica. Through a second examination of the data, we discovered that the popularization of books among the several social classes, the appearance of private libraries, and the relationships between the various social and professional groups and their preferred books revealed the negotiations that allowed for the access to print materials as well as the factors that determined which text genres were read. Book ownership was thus made common, to a lesser or higher extent, through purchase, borrowing, inheritance, and public hearings. Finally, it was possible to verify, through the examination of the books listed in the inventories, that the scholastic thinking and modern Enlightenment philosophy typical of the 1700's influenced the composition of Vila Rica's libraries. Thus we highlight the difference between Vila Rica's libraries and the high-culture character of the other libraries of Minas Gerais in the period, which distinguished themselves from the former because of the traditional prominence of the books that circulated in Vila Rica. We also note that the pragmatism inherent to the books most frequently owned not only determined the intensity and variety of reading genres, but it also was the most prominent quality of Vila Rica's libraries during the Enlightenment
