Abstract in English
This study aims to analyze devotional and political aspects of the sacred theater of D. Pedro Calderón de la Barca, poet of the Spanish Golden Age, who gained considerable prominence within the Court Society. For this purpose, our sources are the autos sacramentales. Allegorical dramas, mostly on a Eucharistic theme, which became relevant for its poetic quality and pedagogical role. The autos sacramentales were present in the Iberian domains during the Ancient Regime and could be seen by all as they were performed outdoors as part of the feast of Corpus Christi celebration. Without disregarding the autos sacramentales as a whole, this study pays particular attention to the autos El gran teatro del mundo (1633-1635) and La vida es sueño (1673). These two dramatic representations contain a kind of synthesis of the poet's worldview and, by extension, of his peninsular peers. The reason is that the notions of the world as theater and life as a dream were in frank dialogue with the teachings of the spiritual literature and political treatises then in vogue, bringing up concerns of the Baroque man, such as fleetingness of earthly life. Lastly, this study seeks to situate the author and his production in relation to the Catholic Reformation and Protestant Reformation movements, as well as in relation to the political, social and economic instability that characterized the 17th century.
