Keywords in Portuguese
Castigos e disciplina
História da educação
História da escravidão
História da infância

Abstract in English
The research is part of discussions about the history of childhood, the history of slavery and the history of education in Brazil between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. We seek to understand how free and slave children were treated during this period. We first analyzed manuals on child rearing and slave rule, demonstrating how the authors of that time perceived childhood and slavery and which normative in relation to health, clothing, food, and especially in relation to education and punishments they defended through their books. Secondly, the focus is on the nineteenth century and the analysis focuses on the Pedro II College and the Vale do Paraíba farms, specifically the city of Vassouras. In this second part, the idea is to understand through practice how these children were treated in these two environments: in a school, where discipline and education can easily be perceived by its regulations and documents regarding student activities; and on Vassouras coffee plantation, through documents such as slaves lists, criminal proceedings, among others. The main objective of the research is to understand how free children and slaves were treated in a society where punishment was linked to the idea of discipline and what were the distinctions between the treatments intended for these children over the centuries.
