Abstract in English
In the second half of the nineteenth century, the Province of São Paulo saw a growing expression of individuals and groups denouncing the slave regime's abuses, including the illegality of slavery. Luiz Gonzaga Pinto da Gama (1830-1882), a black intellectual and activist, excelled amongst these agents, using his judicial knowledge and solidarity networks as a basis for his political activism. As a counterpart of this activism, countless women and men in subaltern condition sought, with Gama's support, to fight for their right in Justice. The current research possesses a double purpose: to trace Gama's clients at the same time as it investigates aspects of his experience as a black abolitionist lawyer. To do so, it used Gama's trajectory as a "starting point" to reach out the stories of the many agents who were part of his clientele. The primary sources used included judiciary, periodical and literary do cuments and letters produces by Luiz Gama, or in which he appears as subject. As for the methodological procedures, emphasis was given to the analysis of judicial and periodical sources. The cross- checking of these two sources revealed many evidences on Luiz Gama and his clientele. A sample was organized based on the data collected, totalizing more than 100 lawsuits and more than 400 clients. The clientele's analysis identified multiple profiles envolving ethnicity, race, gender, judicial status, among others; as well as some of the strategies used by the lawyer. The research made on the newspaper also found many new documents regarding Luiz Gama and his clientele.
