O objetivo desta dissertação é analisar como os recursos materiais e imateriais de famílias das elites do Norte da Gália foram empregados na elaboração das cerimônias funerárias de quatro mulheres, considerando a relação dos sepultamentos com os ambientes circundantes e com as transformações ocorridas no século VI. As sepulturas do corpus são: a sepultura 12 de "La Tuilerie", em Saint-Dizier (França); a sepultura 49 da Basílica de Saint-Denis, em Saint- Denis (França); a sepultura B808 da Catedral de Colônia, em Colônia (Alemanha); e a sepultura 146 de Bossut-Gottechain, em Grez-Doiceau (Bélgica). A incidência de depósitos funerários em grande parte dos túmulos do período foi lida como evidência das posições exatas que os indivíduos ocupavam, mas as novas interpretações chamam a atenção para os discursos construídos durante as cerimônias, que se referiam tanto ao morto quanto àqueles que organizaram seu funeral. Os debates sobre a construção dos gêneros na Arqueologia Funerária têm grandes contribuições a fazer na análise da retórica funerária deste contexto, muito preocupada com a materialização da memória familiar.

This research aims to examine how the material and immaterial resources of elite families from Northern Gaul were employed in the funerary ceremonies of four women, while considering the burials' relationship with their surrounding environments and the transformations that took place in the sixth century. The graves of the corpus are: grave 12 of "La Tuilerie" in Saint-Dizier (France); grave 49 of the Basilica of Saint-Denis in Saint-Denis (France); grave B808 of Cologne Cathedral in Cologne (Germany); and grave 146 of Bossut- Gottechain in Grez-Doiceau (Belgium). The incidence of grave goods in many tombs from this period has been read as evidence of the exact social positions occupied by individuals, but new interpretations draw attention to the construction of discourses during the ceremonies, which referred both to the deceased and to those who organized their funeral. The debates on the social construction of gender in funerary archaeology have great contributions to be made in the analysis of this context's funerary rhetoric, which is much concerned with the materialization of familial memory.
