Negotiating identities: the Egyptian expansion and Nubia under the Eighteenth Dynasty (1550-1425 b.C.)

Abstract in English
This dissertation analyzes identity negotiations between Egyptians and Nubians, from an internal and external context, during the expansion period of the Eighteenth Dynasty (1550- 1425 b.C.). In this period, Egypt dominated, simultaneously, the Levant, in the North and Nubia, in the South. The scholarship about Egyptian and Nubian histories, until mid - Twentieth Century, homogenized Egyptian pluralities while represented Nubia under the Egyptian shadow. Therefore, to overcome the past century Egyptological debates, it is necessary to bring forward a perspective that values Nubian active roles when in contact with Egyptians, and one that emphasizes Egyptian plurality. We take into consideration the conflicts and power disputes present in the context of expansion and the development of the Egyptian administration apparatus in Nubia. Negotiations of identities and the survival strategies are the focus of this investigation, examined in sources from the Lower Nubian elites, and Egyptian officials, analysing their functions and behavior within the Egyptian administrative apparatus, up to the Third Cataract of the Nile. The evidence is mostly textual, with few iconographic sources. The central hypothesis is that the Nubian elites were not simply acculturated or were passive towards the Egyptians, as previously assumed, but these elites were negotiating their identities through status, hierarchies and power, taking into account their political objectives. We also aim to investigate the Egyptian pluralities and Nubian identities elements that influenced Egypt, during the territorial expansion and cultural exchanges.
