Abstract in English
The present research aims to investigate the social dynamic of the "Posto Médico da Assistência Policial" (Police Assistance Medical Clinic). Such "Clinic" had a particularity: it was the Only public facility to provide medical aid for non-epidemic or endemic diseases, as well as in medical emergency cases, when local governments' policy privileged control of contagious diseases. The present study demonstrated the "Posto Médico da Assistência Policial" as an heterogeneous institution, in which different expectations and interests of distinct social forces were confronted, about the goals it should achieve. Thereby, groups whose actions influenced the everyday events of that medical emergency service were analysed: patients (mostly from poor, working classes), public authorities and philanthropists. Among the philanthropists, directors of the hospitals for which poor patients were referred, as well as other institutions which proposed to change such "Posto" policies.
