Abstract in English
This PhD thesis analyzes a set of films, including fictions, documentaries and newsreels, which showed the relation of Fidel Castro's political regime with independency movements and African governments between 1960 and 1991 as well as the political, economic and cultural aspects of Africa. Cuban film production institutions such as the Cuban Institute of Art and Cinematographic Industry (ICAIC) and the Cinematographic and Television Studios of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (ECITVFAR) distinguished their efforts to build images that legitimize the island's presence on that continent. Among privileged themes of this production, the military issue was a guiding principle of most audiovisual narratives, since the Cuban fighters helped several African political groups in their emancipation wars and armed conflicts with neighbouring countries. On this "anti-imperialist" and transatlantic field, some tensions marked the different contexts, whether international, such as, expectations and disappointments with foreign allies, or national, such as, the difficult racial relations on the island and the representations of dead soldiers in combat on the African continent.
