A pesquisa tem como intuito analisar a percepção e o engajamento dos leitores da revista voltada para a comunidade afro-americana The Crisis - A Record of the Darker Races, durante sua primeira década de existência (1910-1920), quanto ao que se refere principalmente ao mercado de trabalho estadunidense e como as relações raciais limitavam a ascensão do trabalhador negro no país. Por meio das cartas que os leitores enviavam para os organizadores da revista e notadamente para seu editor, o ativista e pesquisador, dentre outras denominações, W. E. B. Du Bois, pode-se ter em mente que a constante exposição de situações vivenciadas pelos trabalhadores teria contribuído para uma maior abertura, ainda que lenta, do mercado de trabalho para os afro-americanos. Outro objetivo que foi se configurando durante o processo de escrita está na exposição de que, desde seu início, a instituição para a promoção de diretos civis National Association for the Advancement of Colored People - NAACP esteve engajada em discutir e contribuir para o desenvolvimento do afro-americano como um todo e não, como ficou popularizado, apenas para a classe média negra. A atuação direta e indireta de integrantes e simpatizantes da NAACP que contava com uma considerável rede de conexões pessoais e comerciais permitiu a ampliação do discurso acarretando em uma maior divulgação de questões que não se limitou ao periódico da Associação. Por meio das ações da NAACP, The Crisis e dos leitores que também exerciam o papel de escritores, mesmo que eventualmente, foi criado uma ampla rede de discussão que tinha na melhoria da condição do negro norte-americano seu principal objetivo.

The research aims to analyze the perception and engagement of readers of the magazine aimed at the African-American community The Crisis - A Record of the Darker Races, during its first decade of existence (1910-1920), with regard mainly to the American labor market and how race relations limited the rise of the black workers in the country. Through the letters that readers sent to the magazine's organizers and specially to its editor, the activist and researcher, among other denominations, W. E. B. Du Bois, it can be seen that the constant exposure of situations experienced by workers would have contributed to a greater opening up, albeit slowly, of the labor market for African Americans. Another objective that took shape during the writing process is the fact that, since its inception, the institution for the promotion of civil rights, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People - NAACP, has been engaged in discussing and contributing to the development of the African American as a whole and not, as has become popularized, only for the black middle class. The direct and indirect work of NAACP members and sympathizers, who had a considerable network of personal and business connections, allowed the discourse to be broadened, resulting in a greater dissemination of issues that was not limited to the Association's periodical. Through the actions of the NAACP, The Crisis and the readers who also played the role of writers, albeit eventually, a wide network of discussion was created that had the improvement of the condition of the African-American as its main objective.
