Abstract in English
In order to contribute to the understanding of what Jesuit administration was like in Portuguese America, this research has as its central question to analyze how the Society of Jesus dealt with the dilemmas related to the administration of its lands and labor in the 17th century. To this end, we start by studying the internal correspondence of the order, in which the priests described their daily lives and their doubts about how to proceed with their material goods. From the inside doors of the colleges, the priests had to deal with the organizational imperatives that guided their actions and with the different positions on the mentioned themes. Outside the doors, there was the need for the Society to act in a homogeneous way in defense of its political project. In this sense, administration is taken not only as an expression of the economic activities performed by the Jesuits, but, above all, as a form of concrete exercise of power integrated with the political, moral, and religious aspects of colonial society.
