Abstract in English
This study addresses the relation between holiness and embodiment in the Legenda aurea, hagiographic compilation of Jacopo de Varazze († 1298), Dominican friar and Genoa archbishop. The compilation is part of the Dominican order's attempts to promote orthodox material with theological accuracy that would support their evangelizing efforts. It is based on the Church calendar and combines narratives of the lives of saints with insightful examples, as well as theological and liturgical comments. Redesigned throughout the 13th century, between the 1260s and Varezze's death, Legenda aurea was widely copied, translated and printed until the 17th century, becoming the most popular hagiography of the time. Composed mainly by stories of martyrs and ascetics from the early days of Christianity, the book presents an idea of holiness strongly based on corporeal signs and practices, which distinguish the saints from other christians and reinforce the divine choice of these holy characters. The present study aims to demonstrate the centrality of the saints' corporeal experiences for the construction of these characters in hagiographic narratives, as well as to explore their relationship with the Christian thinking of the period and to contribute to the construction of a history of the body.
