Esta dissertação propõe analisar a forma com que o jogador Pelé foi retratado pela imprensa esportiva brasileira durante o período em que ocorreu sua ascensão enquanto um jogador de futebol profissional. Desde as primeiras menções ao seu nome na grande imprensa, em 1956, até à conquista da Copa do Mundo da Suécia, em 1958. O texto reflete as maneiras como a figura de Pelé foi noticiada pela mídia especializada neste período. Se por vezes o atleta foi elogiado e apresentado como jogador promissor, por outras vezes, se questionou a sua capacidade futebolística, em outras ainda foi retratado como um mero coadjuvante, para, por fim, ser alçado à condição de um dos principais nomes do futebol mundial. A análise considera também outros aspectos e episódios da época, tais como: influência familiar, racismo, a ênfase em sua juventude, o assédio de vários clubes pelo seu futebol, as convocações para a seleção brasileira, a renovação de seu contrato profissional, seus desempenhos e comportamentos nas partidas que atuava, o contexto dos confrontos da Copa do Mundo e da preparação da seleção, entre outros. Todos os fatores que influenciaram na constituição de uma imagem multifacetada do jogador, que teve, com o título mundial de 1958, a sua primeira grande consagração

This dissertation proposes to analyze the way in which the player Pelé was portrayed by the brazilian sports press during the period in which his ascension occurred as a professional football player. From the first mentions of his name in the mainstream press, in 1956, to winning the World Cup in Sweden, in 1958. The text reflects the ways in which the figure of Pelé was reported by the specialized media in this period. If sometimes the athlete was praised and presented as a promising player, at other times his football ability was questioned, at other times he was portrayed as a mere supporting player, to finally be raised to the status of one of the main names in world football. The analysis also considers other aspects and episodes of the time, such as: family influence, racism, the emphasis on his youth, the harassment of several clubs for his football, the calls for the brazilian national team, the renewal of his professional contract, his performances and behaviors in the matches he played, the context of the World Cup clashes and the preparation of the selection, among others. All factors that influenced the constitution of a multifaceted image of the player, who had, with the 1958 world title, his first great consecration
