Abstract in English
This dissertation discusses the construction and multiple connections between the Monument to Dos de Mayo, inaugurated in 1874, and the Monument to Francisco Bolognesi, inaugurated in 1905, in Lima, capital of Peru. First public monuments in Lima to honor Peruvian historical personalities, military heroes who died in conflicts in which Peru was involved in the nineteenth century, originally represented in agony position. They are, respectively, colonel José Gálvez (1819-1866), who died in the Combat of Callao (1866), and colonel Francisco Bolognesi (1816-1880), who died in the Battle of Arica (1880), during the course of the War of the Pacific (1879-1883). We will seek to understand how the monuments participated in the construction of Peruvian national identity, inscribing "places of memory" on the urban space of the capital. From the analysis of the sculptural works, we will seek to decipher the meanings attributed to the victory of the Latin American alliance led by Peru against the Spanish Fleet in the Combat of Callao, as well as Peru's defeat to Chile in the Battle of Arica and in the War of the Pacific. In order to develop these analyses, we will investigate the construction trajectory of both monuments, revisiting the selection process of the projects, the sculptures conception and execution and their opening ceremonies. Finally, we will consider its location in the urban space of Lima, as well as the appropriations made by the city population, from religious ceremonies to workers strike manifestations.
