Esta tese conta a história de um processo, traduzido aqui na trajetória do frade Casimiro Brochtrup, O.F.M. Nascido no território da atual Alemanha, veio para o Brasil no ano de 1894, no momento posterior à Proclamação da República no Brasil. Depois de passar por várias cidades, ora como morador fixo de um ou outro convento, ora missionário pelos sertões adentro, passou a morar definitivamente no Recife, capital do estado de Pernambuco. Aí estabeleceu um trabalho social no Sítio da Macacheira, no bairro de Santo Amaro, local marcado fortemente pela pobreza de seus moradores e pela informalidade urbana de suas habitações. Fundou uma Igreja, capelas, escolas, criou associações, entre outros. Assim, o presente procura compreender, através das ações do sacerdote as relações entre Igreja Católica como vetor de construção de territorialidades urbanas inseridas em um contexto de profunda transformação eclesiástica, além das alternâncias políticas no país. Deste modo, o presente trabalho defende a tese de que a expansão da Igreja Católica entre o final do século XIX e início do século XX, foi sobretudo um processo de expansão territorial de suas fronteiras e racionalização na organização dos seus ativos sociais. This thesis tells the story of a process, translated here in the trajectory of the friar Casimiro Brochtrup, O.F.M. Born in the territory of present-day Germany, he came to Brazil in 1894, after the Proclamation of the Republic (1889). After passing through several cities, sometimes as permanent resident of one or another convent, sometimes as missionary in the backlands, he began to live permanently in Recife, capital of the state of Pernambuco. There he established a social work in Sítio da Macacheira, in the Santo Amaro neighborhood, a place strongly marked by the poverty of its residents and the urban informality. He founded a Church, chapels, schools, created associations, among others. Thus, the present seeks to understand, through the actions of the priest, the relations between the Catholic Church as a vector for the construction of urban territorialities inserted in a context of profound ecclesiastical transformation, in addition to the political alternations in the country. In this way, the present work defends the thesis that the expansion of the Catholic Church between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century was above all a process of territorial expansion of its borders and rationalization in the organization of its social assets.
