Abstract in English
Between 1930 and 1968, São Paulo's psychiatric system had its administration centralized by the Assistência a Psicopatas, which was responsible for the management of state mental hospitals. Throughout this four decades of activity, its trajectory was marked by individual interests, political movements and technical-scientific advents, such as those that led to the transition from a psychiatry sustained by biological and shock therapies to the psychiatry based on neuroleptics. To understand the government agency by its multiple layers, this study proposes a three-level approach, proposing both a macro and a microanalysis. After focusing on the foundations of asylum policy, reassembling the institutionalization of psychiatry in Brazil and the fluid meanings of the psychopathy concept, we'll reach the entity context and its administrative history. In the microhistory scope, this research resorts to the narrative structure proposed by Jonathan D. Spence in The question of Hu (1988) to rescue the patients' individual experiences, registered in the records of the Manicômio Judiciário. The choice to look at the multiple faces of psychopathy aims to rebuild the facets of the entity itself. This itinerary is intended to attest the thesis that the violence and torpor of the hospital-centered model eventually transformed the Assistência a Psicopatas into an important State control tool.
