Abstract in English
This dissertation analyzes and discusses the work Conselheiro Francisco José Furtado: biography and study of contemporary political history, published in 1867 by Tito Franco de Almeida. We analyzed the trajectories of both, both the biographer and the biographed, contemporaries in national politics and from the North of Brazil. We explore the meanings of biographies of this type in the 19th century and the ways of questioning the place of the author and the theory he launches in his pages, that the monarch sought in every way to make his power prevail over the whole of politics. For that, he would have relied on politicians who were supposedly his loyal servants, the moderate conservatives who made up the Progressive League. Imperialism is the name chosen by the author to refer to this mechanism. Therefore, we seek to contextualize the reader in the politics of the second half of the 1860s and to oppose the scenario created by Tito Franco and his interpretations to some of the contestations raised against him. We demonstrate that the author of the work forges a reality convenient to his political and electoral interests at that moment and that he uses criticism of the Emperor to reach his political opponents in a moment of fraying of the Progressive League, in which he wants to preserve and emphasize his and his group liberal identity.
