This thesis is dedicated to investigating training courses for young intellectuals from Angola who are affiliated to the House of Students of the Empire ("Casa dos Estudantes do Império" - "CEI"), from its creation to its closure by the New State. The CEI was conceived as an assistance association created with the endorsement of the Salazar regime to welcome university students from the colonial space who carried out their studies in Portugal, in order to serve as a conveyor belt of the regime's values. However, since its early years the association began to show adherence to the ideas of opposition to the Salazar regime and to the notion of a Portuguese colonial empire (later, Portugal Overseas). During CEI's twenty-one years of existence, the members from Angola represented almost a third of all members, holding the vast majority of the internal management positions of the association, their presence being also predominant among publications of literary and essayistic character edited by the association. These data can be read as evidence that, in subsequent years, Angola would be the former colony of Portugal with the largest number of intellectuals and political leaders connected with the liberation movements whose trajectories were linked to the CEI. Observing the different phases of the association's history in the international context of Afro-Asian independence, the arrangements of the Portuguese New State in face of the emerging opposition to its values in the metropolis and in the colonies, privileging the view on the growing articulation of the cultural and political movements of anti-colonial and nationalist character in Angola, this study approaches the CEI as a privileged space for the construction of political and intellectual networks, on national and international levels, which in the face of the dictatorship and censorship imposed by the regime, provided arrangements capable of offering a unique experience to associates from Angola. Depending on these movements, this investigation also demonstrates how the agency - of the Angolan associates - as well as the presence of material and symbolic elements produced by individuals from this former colony affected the political and social dynamics in the metropolitan space, bypassing the censorship, through its own gaps, in order to oppose the regime's official statements on the social, political and cultural conditions of Angola before sectors of Portuguese society.
