Esta tese de doutorado discute a ficção científica produzida por membros de um grupo denominado The Futurian Society of New York, ou simplesmente The Futurians, que atuou em Nova Iorque de 1938 a 1945. Primeiramente um grupo de fãs, seus membros passaram a dedicar-se profissionalmente à ficção científica no início da década de 1940. No período, houve um boom no mercado editorial das revistas pulps de ficção científica, principal veículo do gênero à época. Nessas revistas, os membros do grupo publicaram dezenas de histórias, explorando as diversas possibilidades que viam na ficção científica. Neste trabalho, as histórias escritas pelos futurians são analisadas a partir dos seguintes eixos: política; ciência; Segunda Guerra Mundial; gênero e raça. Cada capítulo discute como as histórias trabalharam esses temas, que ideias procuraram exaltar e assim, que futuro os autores queriam construir.

This doctoral thesis discusses the science fiction produced by members of a group called The Futurian Society of New York, or simply The Futurians, which existed in New York from 1938 to 1945. First a fan group, its members began to dedicate themselves professionally to science fiction in the early 1940s. During this period, there was a boom in the publishing market of science fiction pulps magazines, the main vehicle of the genre at the time. In these magazines, members of the group published dozens of stories, exploring the many possibilities they saw in science fiction. In this work, the stories written by the futurians are analyzed from the following axes: politics; science; Second World War; gender and race. Each chapter discusses how the stories worked with these themes, what ideas they sought to exalt, and thus what future the authors wanted to build.
