O trabalho propõe uma análise dos debates na Assembleia Legislativa Provincial de São Paulo entre os anos 1835 e 1888 a fim de contribuir para a compreensão da política de imigração levada a cabo pela província nesse período. O objetivo é estudar a forma de atuação do parlamento paulista ao decidir sobre políticas voltadas para obtenção de mão-de-obra para as fazendas de café. O método utilizado é o exame dos discursos legislativos durante o período citado, assim como do repertório de leis provinciais sobre a imigração e sobre a formulação de estratégias para obtenção de formas alternativas de trabalho. Além disso, a análise da imprensa da época se mostrou crucial para entendimento do funcionamento e ação dos partidos Liberal e Conservador.

This paper proposes an analysis of the speeches in the Legislative Assembly Provincial of São Paulo between the years of 1880 and 1888 in order to contribute to the understanding of the immigration policy pursued by the province during this period. The objective is to study the way that São Paulo's Parlament operated when deciding on policies of specific interest as in the case of the implementation of free work at the slavery. The method that will be used is the analysis of legislative speeches during the period, as well as the repertoire of provincial laws on immigration and the transition from slave labor to free labor. In addition, the analysis of the press proved to be crucial for understanding the functioning and action of the Liberal and Conservative parties.
