A formação de academias com vocação historiográfica na América portuguesa durante os setecentos constitui um campo de reflexão intelectual sobre a experiência de colonização. Articuladas às redes acadêmicas européias e portuguesas, os eruditos elaboraram uma perspectiva da especificidade, continuidade temporal e territorialidade americana em meio ao processo de secularização do Império português.

The establishment, in the 18th century, of the Luso-american learned societies opened a fertile field for the intelectual discussion about the colonial experience. Interwowen with European and Portuguese nets, the savants elaborated a view of its specificity, the historical continuity and the American territorial boundaries within the process of secularization of the Portuguese empire.
