Esta dissertação versa sobre as representações pictóricas neerlandesas referentes à guerra entre as coroas ibéricas e as Províncias Unidas no Atlântico, durante o século XVII. Busca-se examinar, em primeiro lugar, os elementos que compõem as imagens com cenas de batalha e retratos de almirantes e generais. Para tanto, analisa-se a trajetória destes artefatos, a começar pelas representações elaboradas pelos funcionários da Companhia das Índias Ocidentais. Numa segunda etapa, investiga-se o processamento deste material pelos gravadores e editores sediados nas Províncias Unidas, até a sua disponibilização, circulação e consumo nas principais cidades europeias. Deseja-se também perscrutar as tópicas e convenções utilizadas na figuração da Companhia das Índias Ocidentais e das tropas por ela mobilizadas. Por fim, a pesquisa se centra na observação da construção pictórica da alteridade, isto é, na forma como os artífices sediados nas Províncias Unidas representaram os inimigos ibéricos e os povos ameríndios e africanos.

This dissertation deals with the Dutch pictorial representations of the war between the Iberian crowns and the United Provinces in the Atlantic, during the 17th century. It seeks to understand the elements which compose the battle scenes and portraits of admirals and generals. Therefore, we analyze the path of these pictorial artifacts, beginning with the representations produced by the employees of the West India Company, which were later assembled by engravers and publishers in the United Provinces, and finally their circulation and consumption in the main European cities. Besides, it will be investigated the topics and conventions used in the figuration of the West India Company and its officials and soldiers. Lastly, the research focuses on the pictorial construction of alterity, i. e., the way in which the artists based in the United Provinces represented the Iberian enemies and the Amerindian and African peoples.
