Este trabalho tem como objetivo investigar as correspondências trocadas entre Gabriela Mistral e Victoria Ocampo entre 1926 a 1956. Ancorado no aporte teórico-metodológico oferecido pela História das Relações de Gênero e das Escritas de Si, pretende elucidar três questões substanciais. A primeira delas refere-se ao modo como construíram suas trajetórias enquanto escritoras, atuantes na vida pública e que obtiveram reconhecimento de seus pares em nível nacional e internacional. Como se produz essa consagração? Em nosso entendimento, ele é fruto da qualidade estética e crítica de seus escritos, mas revela também a capacidade de Mistral e Ocampo em constituírem laços de sociabilidade com escritores e artistas, latino-americanos, europeus e estado-unidenses. Tal rede foi fundamental para que se articulassem no campo literário e obtivessem reconhecimento ali. Em segundo lugar, detivemo-nos à percepção das duas autoras a respeito do papel social da mulher, sobretudo, daquelas que se dedicaram a escrita profissional. Em terceiro, compreender como enxergavam o problema das identidades latino-americanas, temática efervescente nas primeiras décadas do século XX. Por um lado, Mistral enfatizava seu compromisso com o desenvolvimento dos povos indígenas e reconhecia neles a origem da grandeza espiritual latino-americana. Cobrou enfaticamente de Victoria Ocampo uma postura mais engajada em relação aos problemas que assolavam o continente. Em contrapartida, a escritora portenha não manifestava o mesmo entusiasmo: era tributária de certa tradição literária e intelectual europeia, sobretudo, francesa. Tais tensões perduraram ao longo dos trinta anos de amizade e revelaram tanto a forma como encararam as condições políticas, culturais e sociais de seu tempo, como atravessaram suas próprias vidas.

This dissertation aims to investigate the correspondences exchanged between Gabriela Mistral and Victoria Ocampo from 1926 to 1956. Anchored in the theoretical-methodological approach offered by the History of Gender Relations and the "Writings of the self", it aims to elucidate three substantial questions. The first one refers to the way in which they built their trajectories as women, writers, active in public life, and, the most important, which gained recognition from their national and international peers. How is this consecration produced? In our view, it is the result of the aesthetic and critical quality of their writings, but it also reveals the ability of Mistral and Ocampo to form sociable bonds with Latin American, European, and American writers and artists. Such network was fundamental for their articulation in the literary field and for their recognition. Secondly, we dwell on the perception of the two authors about the social role of women, especially those who devoted themselves to professional writing. Thirdly, to understand how they saw the problem of Latin American identities, an effervescent theme in the first decades of the twentieth century. On the one hand, Mistral emphasized her commitment to the development of indigenous peoples and recognized in them the origin of Latin American spiritual greatness. It emphatically charged Victoria Ocampo with a more engaged stance on the problems plaguing the continent. On the other hand, the writer did not express the same enthusiasm: she was a tributary of a certain European literary and intellectual tradition, especially French. Such tensions lasted through the thirty years of friendship and revealed both the way they faced the political, cultural and social conditions of their time, and how such issues went through their own lives.
