Strategies for good living
Abstract in English
Is the concept of strategy just an emphatic way of referring to the personal motivations of individuals from a past time, combined with shortages defined by the environment, perhaps economic, perhaps maybe demographic? Is it possible to empirically show that social actors drew up certain long-term and conscious plans, and that they were recognized and accepted by their peers? Does the concept manage to distinguish between the subjects ones who elaborate from those who are affected by them? This research aims to investigate the possibility of using this conceptual framework in order to allow us to rediscover - through the life course paradigm - family arrangements, short and long-term decisions and the anticipation of the future by individuals who have had their choices based on the America's southern portuguese assetments, in the transition from the 1600s to the 1700s. It seeks to understand how, in the southern (inlands) of São Paulo, more specifically in the (Nossa Senhora da Lux dos Pinhais de Curitiba's village, the society resolved the impasses between land tenure, social prestige and formation of leather, paying attention, in this process, to the role of family alliances in the mechanisms of social inclusion and exclusion. Using the registrations of purchase and sale of land, wills and post-mortem inventories, sesmarias letters, parish baptism, marriage and death records and genealogical reconstitution, the 'strategies of well living' of São Paulo were recomposed, Portuguese and Spaniards, participants in the elevation of Curitiba to the village status and some of its generations who transited through those places, among those established as land's nobles and of local prominence, according to the then customary logic of social hierarchy. Such strategies are understood as the set of decisions taken throughout their lives, especially those related to: 1) formation and establishment of kinship ties, mainly through marriage and godparenthood; 2) possession and acquisition of land and other captives; 3) belonging to administrative instances of population control and ordering. The study allows, on the one hand, to glimpse the gaps that a society in the process of formation offered for individuals (un)provided with a name and condition by their birth to undertake a trajectory of ascending social mobility; on the other hand, also realizing that other characters knew the order that would allow such access but, even tracing the 'ideal' paths, they were relegated to a peripheral plane within that social structure. Such premises make it possible to reveal certain nuances of their logic within certain social directions.
