Trinta anos após o fim da União Soviética, os historiadores ainda buscam compreender os processos que culminaram na queda da superpotência socialista. O papel de Gorbachev nesse processo costuma ser analisado a partir de sua atuação enquanto líder político, sobretudo em relação às medidas adotadas e às consequências finais da perestroika. O presente trabalho realiza uma análise sistemática da evolução do pensamento político e econômico de Mikhail Gorbachev não apenas durante a perestroika, mas também durante os períodos anteriores e posteriores, traçando um panorama histórico das principais transformações, mudanças e continuidades em suas ideias. Para tanto, serão examinadas as publicações de Gorbachev, com ênfase nos livros, discursos, entrevistas, declarações públicas e outros documentos de sua autoria. A partir da leitura comparativa e crítica dessas fontes, sob a égide do método historiográfico e em diálogo com outros autores que também se dedicaram à temática, pretendemos demonstrar que os princípios que nortearam as reformas já estavam sendo gestados antes da chegada de Gorbachev ao Kremlin, embora ele mantivesse ainda forte alinhamento à ideologia oficial do regime; que a evolução do seu pensamento conservou uma relação dialógica com o contexto histórico no qual se desenvolveu, antes e depois do ocaso soviético; e que as modificações introduzidas na política externa, algumas concebidas antes mesmo dele assumir a liderança, representaram uma mudança de paradigma decorrente das ideias do líder e se afastavam significativamente da plataforma adotada por seus antecessores. Ao que nos consta, este é o primeiro trabalho acadêmico que examina, sistemática e profundamente, os escritos e pronunciamentos de Gorbachev em todas as fases de sua vida adulta (antes, durante e depois da perestroika).

Thirty years after the end of the Soviet Union, researchers are still trying to understand the processes that resulted in the fall of the socialist superpower. Gorbachev's role in this process is usually analyzed from the point of view of his performance as a political leader, especially with regard to the measures adopted and the final consequences of perestroika. The present work carries out a systematic analysis of the evolution of Mikhail Gorbachev's political and economic thought not only during perestroika but also during previous and subsequent periods, tracing a historical panorama of the main transformations, changes and continuities in his ideas. For this purpose, Gorbachev's publications between the 1970s and 2010s will be examined, with emphasis on his books, speeches, interviews, public statements and other documents. From a comparative and critical reading of these sources, under the aegis of the historiographical method and in dialogue with other authors who have also dedicated themselves to this theme, we intend to demonstrate that the guiding principles of the reforms had already been gestating before Gorbachev's coming to power in the Kremlin, although he still maintained a general alignment with the official ideology of the regime; that the evolution of his thought maintained a dialogical relationship with the historical context in which it developed, before and after the Soviet Union's dissolution; and that the changes introduced in foreign policy, in part also conceived before he assumed the leadership of the country, represented a paradigm shift arising from the leader's ideas and significantly departed from the platform adopted by his predecessors. To our knowledge, this is the first scholarly work that systematically and deeply examines Gorbachev's writings and pronouncements at all stages of his adult life (before, during, and after perestroika).
