Abstract in English
The goal of this dissertation is to understand how Paraguays economical and political institutions, established in the post-Triple Alliance War, years impacted the countrys economic performance, and to ascertain if, between 1870 and 1890, Paraguay was able to recover from the economic consequences of the war. The pace of economic recovery versus that of demographic recovery is also highlighted. Official statistics produced by Paraguay in the timeframe, and also cards, newspapers and books from the era in scrutiny were used as sources. Paraguay, in 1870, was a destroyed nation. Five years of war against Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay, in a conflict that was concentrated in Paraguayan land, erased the pre-existing economic and political structures and sank the country into a heavy demographic crisis. Economic recovery proceeded at a very slow pace, slower than demographic recovery, and, while improvement in most economic indicators can be seen 1890 in relation to their respective levels in 1870, by the end of the period being studied the efforts in rebuilding werent enough to reestablish the levels of pre-war economic activity
