Esta pesquisa insere-se no campo de estudo da História econômica, na vertente relacionada ao trabalho escravo e o objetivo principal é analisar a escravidão, o mercado interno e as exportações na economia de Ilhéus entre 1850 e 1888. Esta comarca, localizada no sul da Bahia, se tornou uma das principais áreas produtoras de cacau do Brasil no século XX e pretendemos investigar as origens deste processo, tentando entender as características dos produtores e não produtores de cacau, como a composição da riqueza, a estrutura da posse de escravos e o perfil demográfico da população escravizada. Outros objetivos consistem em analisar o mercado interno e as exportações para conhecermos as peculiaridades desta economia, avaliando, entre outras questões, as atividades de subsistência e exportação, a circulação de mercadorias, o sistema de crédito, o acesso a terras e a presença do trabalho escravo. Para alcançarmos os objetivos propostos utilizamos as seguintes fontes documentais: 345 inventários post-mortem, Livros de cobrança de impostos da Câmara Municipal, Livro de classificação dos escravos para libertação pelo fundo de emancipação, Falas e Relatórios de presidentes de província, Recenseamento Geral do Império do Brasil de 1872 e relatos de viajantes estrangeiros. Ao compulsarmos os informes desta documentação pretendemos apresentar algumas conclusões sobre as particularidades da escravidão e da economia de Ilhéus no período assinalado e inserir o estudo entre as pesquisas históricas desenvolvidas recentemente.

This research is inserted in the field of economic history study, focused on slave labor. The main goal is to analyze slavery, the domestic market and exports in Ilhéus economy between 1850 and 1888. This region is located in the south of Bahia state and became one of the main cocoa producing areas of Brazil in the twentieth century. We investigate the origins of this process assessing the characteristics of cocoa producers and non-producers, such as wealth composition, structure of slaveholding and the demographic profile of the enslaved population. Other goals consist in the domestic market and exports analysis to comprehend the peculiarities of this economy, appraising, inter alia, subsistence and export activities, circulation of goods, credit system, access to land and the presence of labor slave. To achieve the proposed objectives, we use the following sources: 345 post-mortem inventories, city council tax collection books, classification slaves for liberation by the emancipation fund, Provincial Speeches and Reports, 1872 Brazil Empires Census and reports from foreign travelers. By compiling the reports of such collection, we intend to present some conclusions about the particularities of slavery and the economy of Ilhéus in the period indicated and to insert the study among the historical researches recently developed.
