O objetivo deste trabalho é o estudo de atividades empresariais no Segundo Império, através da análise da trajetória de uma empresa privada do setor de transporte, a Companhia União e Industria; ou seja, sua fundação, atuação, desempenho econômico e as razões que levaram a sua encampação pelo Estado e posterior desaparecimento. Observamos também a formação da estrutura de transporte, notadamente o rodoviário, e seu papel no desenvolvimento econômico desse período, bem como a atuação das elites dirigentes do país nesse mesmo processo

The aim of this work is the research of the empresarial activities in the brazilian second empire, trough the analysys of one private enterprise to the transport sector, the União e Industria Company; your foundation, actuation, economical development, and the reasons who will leave to the State intervention and final desagree. We observe too, the nineteen century road transport structure grow up, and the brazilian elite works in this development
