Esta tese trata de um momento decisivo no longo processo de Revolução Burguesa no Brasil. É pressuposto, para uma vasta bibliografia, que uma série de alterações estruturais, com expressão na economia, política, cultura e sociedade brasileiras, ocorreram no longo período de 1850-1945. Neste sentido, é argumento aqui que variadas transformações substanciais deste período histórico adquirem nítida expressão entre os anos de 1914-1922, recorte temporal adotado para a análise. Em uma conjuntura de acentuação de fatores estruturais da economia brasileira, especialmente de sua dependência em relação ao centro do sistema capitalista, este foi o momento tanto de greves generalizadas em diferentes centros regionais quanto de iniciativas de insurreição organizada de setores da classe trabalhadora, bem como de tentativas de resposta de setores da classe dominante à chamada Questão Social, termo que designava variados problemas emergentes relativos à formação de uma realidade urbana e industrial. No referido processo, distintas classes e setores sociais engajaram-se na formulação de respostas aos problemas historicamente postos então. O objetivo desta tese é compreender a formação de coletividades sociais e políticas no bojo deste processo, e o processo de tentativa, por diferentes personagens, de responder aos dilemas emergentes com a Grande Guerra. Com atenção na configuração e processualidade histórica brasileira de então e na própria inserção desta realidade em um mundo em transformação, são investigados textos em periódicos, livros, opúsculos e pronunciamentos políticos nos quais encontram-se tanto manifestações de posições de classe diante de sua realidade quanto iniciativas de interpelação e constituição de diferentes sujeitos sociais a partir deste posicionamento de classe no conflituoso terreno das lutas sociais. Neste sentido, evidencia-se em um período concentrado a formulação de diferentes respostas ideológicas à uma conjuntura de crise, as quais atuaram então e seguiram como ressonância na medida em que os problemas que as ensejaram seguiram vicejando, ainda que com novas formas.

This thesis deals with a decisive moment in the long process of the Bourgeois Revolution in Brazil. It is assumed, for a vast bibliography, that a series of structural changes, with expression in the Brazilian economy, politics, culture and society, took place in the long period of 1850-1945. In this sense, it is argued here that several substantial transformations of this historical period acquire clear expression between the years 1914-1922, a time frame adopted for the analysis. In a context of accentuation of structural factors in the Brazilian economy, especially its dependence on the center of the capitalist system, this was the time for both widespread strikes in different regional centers and organized insurrection initiatives by sectors of the working class, as well as of attempts to respond by sectors of the ruling class to the so-called Social Question, a term that designated various emerging problems related to the formation of an urban and industrial reality. In that process, different social classes and sectors engaged in formulating answers to the problems historically posed then. The objective of this thesis is to understand the formation of social and political collectivities with the Proclamation of the Republic, and the process of trying, by different characters, to respond to the dilemmas that emerged with the Great War. Paying attention to the Brazilian historical configuration and procedurality and to the insertion of this reality in a changing world, texts in periodicals, books, pamphlets and political pronouncements are investigated in which there are both manifestations of class positions in face of its reality and initiatives of questioning and constitution of different social subjects from this class positioning in the conflicting terrain of social struggles. In this sense, it is evident in a concentrated period the formulation of different ideological responses to a situation of crisis, which then acted and continued as a resonance as the problems that gave rise to them continued to flourish, even if with new forms.
