Abstract in English
The process of colonial occupation of the inland of Portuguese America from the 17th century onwards, such as in the hinterlands (sertões) of Seridó, began with the unfolding of coastal occupation. This context, to a large extent, was articulated with the export of sugar, driven by European mercantile expansion, configuring the colonial dynamic. The population growth on the coast and the need for new areas, notably for pastoral activity, in turn, drove the occupation of inland areas, which were connected to European trade directly or indirectly. In the first case, with the export of leather, and in the second, with the supply of food and animals demanded by the population of the sugar coast. Regarding the backlands of Seridó, following this process, the emergence of the first institutions of colonial administration was evident, such as the Freguesia da Gloriosa Senhora Sant'Ana in 1748 and the Vila Nova do Príncipe in 1788, which functioned as mechanisms for organizing colonial life and legitimizing the power of resident elites. In such a manner, this study aims to examine the process of formation and legitimation of the hinterland elite of Vila Nova do Príncipe between the 18th and 19th centuries. Considering this, we will use sources from judicial, religious, and civil administration, which will be methodologically analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. Finally, the investigation undertaken about the resident elite of Ribeira do Seridó seeks to fill gaps regarding these groups, cross-referencing sources of different typologies (judicial and parochial, for example) to obtain more precise information regarding the social organization of the hinterlands of Rio Grande and the formation and patterns of legitimation of this old cattle-raising elite. Considering the establishment of municipal councils in their riverbanks, which inaugurate new way of social ascension.
