Abstract in English
In this study, the exit tax levied on slaves departing from Bahia to the mining areas is analyzed in the context of the Old Colonial System. The tax is studied as a mechanism, adopted by the Crown, for the reorganization of the Atlantic slave trade in the first half of the 18th century. The study demonstrates how the tax was collected and enforced. It examines the mercantile networks involved in the relocation of slaves to the gold mines, the conflicts over how the slaves were to be dispatched, the complaints from the planters and farmers and the improvements in enforcement achieved by administering the tax via contracts, a procedure which sought to reduce illicit practices and ensure a good revenue for the Fazenda Real.
