Abstract in English
The present study approaches the plot of alliance and conflict that involved the colonizing expansion process in Campos de Palmas during the 19th century. This region - which includes the current Southwestern region of Paraná and Western region of Santa Catarina - consisted, in that period, of territories inhabited by indigenous groups, particularly the one which is currently known as Kaingang. After the colonization of Campos de Guarapuava, in the second decade of the 19th century, the region started to attract cattle farmers desiring to establish new properties intended for an extensive animal breeding. In this colonizing endeavor, indigenous peoples were compelled to other areas or became allied with colonizers, forming real armed militias to defend farmers against resistant indigenous groups. Given this scenario, this study aims at understanding the dynamics of the alliances and conflicts through the analysis of a variety of sources, with a particular emphasis on the correspondences exchanged by authorities instituted by the government, parish records produced by the Catholic Church, and censuses data. Thus, it was possible to identify the alliances celebrated through the exchange of goods and favors, as well as mixed unions and compadrazgo relationships.
