Abstract in English
A study of the metal discovery practices and of precious stones in Portuguese America that corresponded to the symbolic political and economic game of the invention of the Minas Gerais of gold and diamonds. In the historical configuration process of this singular place in the Lusitain domains, there was the symbolic and political mobilization of people from São Paulo to discover Minas as the construction of Fernão Dias Pais's heroic enterprise from the decade of 1680 has shown. In this conception, wilderness men movement practiced by the discoverers nominees, even when it resulted in imprisoning of Indians, became legitimate and suited to the political interests of the Crown. The wilderness men discoverers became the privileged agents of the State, receiving prizes that denoted the power given to them, but also appropiating the profits of the colonial experience in the discovery of precious minerals. With the fame of Minas, other colonists without any connections with the discoverer's parties sought the gold wilderness, pointing out the meaning of the place in the Portuguese Empire as suitable for the mining. While the powerful founded their political power in the fame in the representation of the miners, the poor and the slaves, forging their rights (not only in the mineral production), enlarged the social and economic options that redefined indeed the outlines of Minas space during the colonial time
