O presente trabalho consiste na problematização das análises comumente adotadas sobre o que caracterizaria o governo de João Goulart. Inicialmente apresentamos a teoria mais consagrada sobre o período, a corrente interpretativa que toma todo o período, desde o Varguismo até o Golpe Militar, como caracterizado pelo "populismo" - representada sobretudo por Octávio Ianni, Franscisco Weffort e José Álvaro Moisés. Em seguida, apresentaremos os principais críticos desta teoria, bem como alguns autores que advogam sua retomada. Na tentativa de indicar os limites das análises correntes sobre tal período e expandir a investigação, retomamos os principais debatedores da própria época. Como contraponto, apresentamos indicações teóricas que sinalizam um outro caminho de apreensão da realidade, baseado na categoria de particularidade histórica e nas vias de objetivação do capitalismo. Por fim, abordaremos autores que consideramos seguir estas indicações, chegando, portanto, ao efetivo entendimento do que particulariza o capitalismo brasileiro, em geral, e o período Goulart, em específico. Nossas conclusões apontam para a necessidade de uma retomada da pauta econômica como norte do debate, bem como a necessidade de situar a singularidade do período presidido por João Goulart na particularidade histórica do capitalismo colonial.

The present work consists of the problematization of analysis commonly adopted about what the characteristics of João Goulart´s government would have. Initially, we present the most established theory about this period, the interpretative chain which takes all the period, since the Varguismo up to the Military Coup, characterized as "populism" - represented, mainly, by Octávio Ianni, Francisco Weffort, and José Álvaro Moisés. Following, we will present the main critics of this theory, as well as some authors who defend its resumption. Trying to indicate the limits of this current analysis about this period, and expand the investigation, we bring back the most important debaters of that time. As a counterpoint, we present theoretical indications that sign another way for reality apprehension, based on the history particularity category and how capitalism is defined. In the end, we will mention the authors who are supposed to follow these indications, coming, then, to an agreement of what makes the Brazilian capitalism so particular, especially the Goulart´s period. Our conclusions point to the necessity of a resumption of the economic agenda to guide the debate. There is, also, the necessity to site the singularity of this period presided by João Goulart in this historical particularity of the colony capitalism.
