Abstract in English
This dissertation investigates the development of cotton economy in Brazil during the Vargas Era, relating the rise of cotton farming to the external sector crisis, to Brazilian industrialization process and to foreign interests and international agreements related to economic development efforts after the 1929 Crisis. Considering that cotton became Brazil's main agricultural product as a result of its expansion amid the downfall of coffee production, following a regional dynamic contrary to its traditional planting and responding to stimuli of multiple natures due to its industrial character, this work recovers the factors that determined the movement and clarifies the role played by the product in a period of transformation of Brazilian economy and international trade as a result of the Great Depression and the Second World War. Based on the analysis of documentary sources, as well as of relevant historiographic literature, this dissertation offers a multifactorial reconstruction of the determinants and consequences of this phenomenon.
