O uso da terra foi analisado no município de Avaré -SP, através de fotografias aéreas, imagens de radar e de satélite, utilizando-se da interpretação convencional, apoiada pela interpretação celular e leituras de densidade ótica. Procurou-se dessa forma verificar a eficiência de mapeamento temático em grandes e pequenas escalas, e as possibilidades que cada uma das imagens oferecia. O estudo apoiou-se nos sistemas de classificações de uso da terra, de vários autores, resultando no final uma associação dos mesmos, feitas as adaptações necessárias ao local. As análises dos resultados permitem concluir que: a) a aplicabilidade dos diversos sistemas de classificação existentes mostrou-se satisfatória, devendo-se, todavia, levar em consideração o objetivo da pesquisa; b) os resultados obtidos pela análise das imagens de radar mostraram-se satisfatórios, verificando-se que a determinação de classes de uso da terra para mapeamento temático em pequena escala é aceitável; c) os resultados obtidos com as imagens de satélite foram melhores que os alcançados com as imagens de radar, principalmente pela possibilidade de se trabalhar com diferentes canais, bem como pela utilização de leituras densitométricas; d) a experiência obtida através do presente estudo indica a vantagem do uso associado das fotografias pancromáticas, imagens de radar e de satélite, para o inventário do uso da terra, pois o nível de informações é complementado; e) a eficiência dos mapas deve ser levada em conta, pois permite a detectação de erros de classificação; f) finalmente, os resultados sugerem que a metodologia é aplicável em outras regiões similares.

The land use was analysed in the municipality of Avaré -SP., through aerial photographs, radar and satellite images, using regular interpretation, with help of celular interpretation and optical density readings. The objective of this research was the verification of the efficiency of the tematic mapping in large and small scales and the possibilities of each type of image. In the study were used classification systems of differents researchers, and after adaptation was produced a final classification system. The analysis of the results led to the following conclusions: a) The use of the different systems of classification was satisfactory, but the objective of the research must be considered; b) The results obtained by the analysis of the radar images were satisfactory, and the organization of the classes of land use for tematic mapping is acceptable; c) The results obtained by the analysis of the Landsat imagery were better than the results obtained by radar, mainly due the different channels, as well the utilization of density readings: d) The association of the obtained results for each images improved the level of information; e) The efficiency of the maps must be considered, since enable the detection of mistakes in the classification; f) The results suggest the use of the mathodology
