Abstract in Portuguese
No Brasil, o único UGGp é o Geopark Araripe, no Ceará.

Abstract in English
According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), a geopark is a unified geographical area in which sites and landscapes of international geological relevance are managed through a holistic concept of protection, education and sustainable development. According to UNESCO guidelines, a geopark must be able to articulate the geological heritage with other natural and cultural elements of the area, and mobilize tourism as the main economic activity to be developed. When included in the International Geosciences and Geoparks Programme (IGGP), the title UNESCO Global Geopark (UGGp) was created for all areas that are part of the network. In Brazil the only UGGp is the Araripe Geopark, in Ceará. However, there are 29 other areas recognized for the potential to become a geopark systematized through the "Geoparks Project" of Geological Survey of Brazil (CPRM). The spatiality of these proposals reveals an interesting aspect, since most of them are concentrated between the regions Northeast, Southeast and South of the country. This dissertation has the general objective of critically analyzing the creation of proposals of geoparks in Brazil, seeking to identify and understand the social, political and economic forces, and actors involved in the process. It still stand out as a general objective to apprehend the spatial logic related to the uneven geography produced by theses proposals. To support the analytical path, we choose the theoretical-conceptual triad heritage-tourism-sustainable development, considered as an aggregator of the mains concepts and paradigms that form the basis for understanding what a geopark is. The geoparks proposals were analyzed based on the material "Geoparks of Brazil: proposals", organized by CPRM, and through questionnaires directed to the main people involved with each one. Complementing the investigation, Geopark Araripe was selected as a case study. It was evident that, taking into account the spatiality of tourist activities and protected goods listed in Brazil, the proposals of geoparks follow the same pattern and, to a certain extent, reinforce Brazilian uneven development. It also revealed a marked correlation between tourism and sustainable development as a cause and a consequence between the speeches of the main parties involved with the respective proposals. This fact highlights the strength of the global territorial planning paradigm defined by the triangulation of heritage protection, tourism and sustainable development.
