Viveiros de citros

Socio-economic profile of the nursery owner and the worker
Abstract in English
One of the requirements to keep Brazil as the top exporter of frozen concentrated orange juice is to have competitive and accessible prices to most part of consumers. Inevitably, this situation goes through the agricultural production costs where productivity depends on seedlings of good quality. To get this it is necessary to recruit and train people so as to take this segment over in a balanced and competitive way, besides investing on technological assets, genetic improvement, etc. The nursery segment was chosen as the theme of this thesis for the great structural changes it is going through in the forms and productions norms of seedlings, in the nursery entrepreneurs as well as in the labour force occupation. For this study the chosen regions were The State of São Paulo and the Minas Triangle (MG) where it is placed the major concentration of citrus nurseries in Brazil. In order to obtain results and to trace the socio-economic profile of the individuals specific questionnaires were elaborated and the techniques used were stratified samples in two stages. The analyses showed that the segment reorganizes itself in a tiny period of time. The rudimentary production forms and the labour force absortion are replaced by a kind of production highly based upon science and techonology. Also, the necessary spaces to the production are transformed into fixed structures where the edapho-climatic effects and the work pace are planned and controlled. The producers who do not assimilate the new order will be excluded from the citrus sector
